Can I use USB in ESX Server?

I have a physical box that contains usb dongle. Can I convert this box physical to virtual and be able to use usb dongle? I am using infrastructure 3 and VM Converter to convert from physical to virtual.

Answer: According to the VMware documentation, ESX Server hosts don’t support USB controllers. Therefore, you will not be able to use USB for the virtual machines converted from physical ones.

Do you know if this is the same case for free VMware Server?

No, you can use USB in VMware Server - also note, that if you're using a Windows host, there are IP-based USB hubs that can be accessed over the network; sadly none have drives for Linux yet.
