How to convert an ESX 3.x VM image into a workstation image in 6.0.2?

Answer:

To get around this issue you can take following steps:

  1. First, create a VM, compatible with ESX on the workstation (to do this, when creating a VM choose: Custom; then Hardware Compatibility: Workstation 5 + ESX server compatibility) and with a same parameters as in the original ESX.
  2. Then use Veeam FastSCP to copy the hard disk file from the original ESX (%machine_name%-flat.vmdk) to the workstation and switch it with its hard disk file.
